Let's say this type of person is insecure, or just doesn't care...From a psychological perspective, is a reckless person/hedonist who just wants to pay women for sex and eat at Ruth's Chris all the time...does this stem from problems the person is having now or is the root always in childhood?
Many psychotherapists always blame the mother...issues of abandonment that the child feels. Maybe there was no money in the family - now that the person has money he reacts by spending it all as opposed to feeling like he is poor as he felt in his childhood. In terms of women, there may be resentment towards the mother so he can truly never find a decent relationship, he mistakes erotic lust for love and only feels happiness when he eroticizes everything.
What do you make of a hedonist who shows this type of behavior? Troubled, spoiled, hurt, confused, lost, reckless??
Love to hear your responses! What type of childhood does one usually have if they grow up to be a total hedonist obsessed with sex?
All of the above. I see many reasons for people to act like this.
Troubled/hurt/confused: yeah, plenty of abused people that grow up to be crazy over-indulgent with things, especially ones who were deprived a lot in childhood.
Spoiled: people simply going along with how they've always lived, to a new level now that they can go to strip clubs and afford overpriced steaks.
Lost: people looking to find what they want in life by overindulging on everything until they like it.
Reckless: I would say this describes a lion's share of cases.
You also forgot the socialization aspect, which affects all of the factors you listed. For example, a spoiled son whose father does all this stuff is likely to do the same. An abused child who was shielded from all these things, then gets out into the real world and discovers them, can go nuts and overindulge. It does not just depend on your parents, it depends on everything around you as you develop. A Kansas farm boy in the middle of effing nowhere would be over-stimulated and probably unable to cope too well with a place like NYC. They may end up enjoying it so much that they just go crazy. You just never know what kinds of influences make a person turn out one way or the other. I mean hell, would Hitler have done everything he did if his father wasn't abusive? Or was it just the fact that his father wanted to force him to become a customs official? Human development has so many different facets, it is almost entirely impossible to tell just what made us who we are. Probably best that it remains that way, though. If you can identify every step of the way how one person is going to develop, you can control that development.
